Chopped strand mat is one of NIU® MATERIAL‘s main products. It is mainly used in FRP/GRP pipes and tanks, boatbuilding and repair, water tanks and cooling towers, swimming pools and automotive parts. Common specifications are 300 g and 450 g at 1250 mm or 1040 mm width, in emulsion-bonded or powder-bonded form; weight, width and roll weight can be customized to your process.

What 300 g/m², 1250 mm Emulsion Chopped Strand Mat Solves

The specification in this order is 300 g/m², 1250 mm width, emulsion-bonded E-glass chopped strand mat — it suits hand lay-up and winding processes, and is used mainly for the resin-rich liner and interlayer reinforcement of GRP pipes and tanks.

GRP pipes and tanks are built by laying resin and reinforcement layer by layer, and the innermost of those layers is chopped strand mat. When a finished part fails, it is usually not because too little resin was poured, but because that layer was not right. This specification targets four very concrete problems:

    • Dry patches and white spots on curved lay-ups. Where resin penetrates slowly, curved surfaces keep white spots that never wet out properly. These defects often only surface at hydrostatic testing — or after the pipe is buried. Emulsion-bonded mat has randomly distributed fibers and even porosity, wets out smoothly, and sharply cuts the odds of dry patches and white spots.
    • Wall thickness that drifts along a pipe or across a tank. Thickness variation mostly comes from variation in resin uptake, and that depends on how even the mat weight is. Stable weight and standard roll weights keep thickness and strength consistent along every pipe run and across every tank body, which is what hydrostatic and strength acceptance actually tests.
    • Delamination that only appears after burial. Chopped strand mat bridges woven roving and roving, tying the reinforcement layers together. Where bonding is insufficient, the pipe only reveals the problem once it is buried and under soil load and thermal movement — the most expensive moment to rework.
    • A corroded liner and leaks a few years later. These pipes carry water, sewage or chemical media; the resin-rich liner is the first line of defence, and that liner is formed on a chopped strand mat backbone. A poor liner cuts service life directly.

What This Order Solved for the Client

This order ran from 31 December 2024 to confirmation on 29 July 2026, spanning three calendar years. The client is an integrated industrial and trading group, and every metre of mat it buys goes into its own GRP pipe and tank production — a line stoppage is a direct loss. This order had two things to solve for the client.

Material available at any time, so the line never stops

The client’s previous material came from another supplier, and purchasing was suspended over the logistics risk created by the war — cut the material and the whole line stops. And the risk on the purchasing side is not something the client can solve alone: unstable sailings, cargo stuck in port, at times no direct service at all, and real cases of payment made while goods sit in transit.

Our answer was to route around shipping — positioning ready stock of 300 g/m², 1250 mm emulsion mat in Dubai so the client can collect it locally, with the uncertainty of port delays and sailing schedules dropping to zero. Supply for that line no longer depends on straits, ports and carriers.

What arrives can go straight onto the line

The practical question when changing suppliers is whether the line has to change with the material. The specification finally settled at 300 g/m², 1250 mm width, emulsion-bonded E-glass chopped strand mat — matching the way they lay up and cut.

And the approach serves more than this one client: with the stock held in Dubai, GRP pipe and tank plants across the UAE and the surrounding market can collect locally on proven specifications.

Ready stock settled “can we get the material at all”; the specification settled “once we have it, can we use it directly” — with both in place, this Omani GRP pipe and tank group put the line’s material back on the table and kept it with a single supplier long term.

What Else We Do to Serve the Client

Supplying the goods is only part of a partnership. Two more things were taken on in this order.

During the purchasing pause, we did not walk away. The client suspended purchasing over logistics risk; chasing only pushes a cautious buyer away, while total silence makes it look as though the cooperation has ended. Our approach was neither to chase nor to pester, but to stay present — sharing progress on the plan and on stock readiness so the client could confirm at any time that the route was still open. When purchasing restarts, readiness is the competitive advantage.

The preparation was done in advance, not assembled on the spot. The pickup arrangements, the deliverable specifications and the pre-shipment preparations were all in place before the client placed an order, so when purchasing restarted there was no waiting for production schedules or sailings.

The Next Order — AR Strands for Cement-Based Products

Alkali-resistant chopped strands in cement-based decorative products — three questions clients ask most.

The fibers are invisible, so are they even reinforcing? The strands are fine, and once mixed into the cement matrix they disperse evenly — being hard to see by eye is exactly the sign of good dispersion. The judgement should rest on the flexural and impact performance of the finished part, not on appearance.

6 mm or 12 mm? Set by part type: fine pieces and thin-walled shapes take 6 mm, structural parts take 12 mm — not copied from a catalogue.

How much, and how to mix? Dosage, feeding order and mixing time all affect dispersion and the final result, and are aligned with the client’s existing process item by item so the result settles at the sampling stage.

These have all been settled on a client’s line: a cement decorative furniture manufacturer in the Philippines uses exactly these strands at 6 mm and 12 mm.
